WEST VIRGINIA

Census Records

1870 – 1920

=============

UPDATED AUGUST 21, 2021

West Virginia was a part of Northwestern Virginia until the Civil War. These people just couldn’t support the Confederacy. The area split off when the War started and it became a state in 1863. Therefore the early census records were included in Virginia through the 1860 return. From 1870 on, West Virginia had its own census listings.

The Putnams and Putmans here are basically from two Virginia families. The New England family of John Jeptha Putnam from Bath County, and the Southern Putman families from Fauquier and Warren Counties Virginia. If you go to the Southern Putman Section, then to the Virginia Section, you can get much more information on these families. Later on a few Southern families came up from the Carolinas and several New England families came over from Ohio and some from Pennsylvania.
